PRELIM: Task and Terms

Preliminary exercise: Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

Continuity task - everything appears logical on screen and it flows. If you break these rules the audience becomes aware that they are watching something fake.
match on action - continuing an action through different shots, for example, going through a door, someone pushes the door and the next shot they will go through the door.
shot/reverse shot - camera position and editing to cut between two people having a conversation. It switches the focus from one character to the other and then back again.
180-degree rule - an imaginary line between two people having a conversation, and you can't cross the line otherwise it looks like the characters have switched places. The camera must stay on one side of the line at all times throughout the conversation.
